Once again, the Office of Open Questions ensures that you can participate in the festival in a slightly more intensive and interactive fashion. In the spirit of Paranoia TV, we broadcast our events on different channels from our back office on the second floor of our headquarters. So get ready to immerse yourself in different artistic projects with us, gathered around a large table filled with impressions and excerpts! All of this entirely at your discretion, depending upon your preference regarding time management, your readiness to travel, your health condition and your current need for intimacy. We look forward to your visit.

No matter which channel you choose, we invite you to, as always, examine the steirischer herbst program with open questions in mind. While up to now our Open Questions card game had been the pivot of our discussions, this time around it’s your turn: tell us your questions about the artworks or the festival and Paranoia TV itself. They will be collected with a web tool and—supplemented by comments from the Paranoia TV team—made available in the online Archive of Open Questions_2020. In this way, you can also be inspired by what went through others’ minds when faced with the artworks. Please do not hesitate to send further questions directly to education [at] steirischerherbst.at or to fill in the question cards which you will find on the website under the information on individual artists.

miniPARANOIA

TV format on the current festival program for children and curious people, aged 9 to 99, for those who are in afternoon care and those give afternoon care, at school, at home or in a nursing home.

Use It! – Silent Crafting mit den Dingen des täglichen Lebens

(Use It! – Silent Crafting with Everyday Objects)

Zoom workshop

Let us appease the spirit of the age and show that we understand it through our offerings. That it probably wants us to create and develop things in the here and now. That, in a time that keeps us apart, it is important to maintain a connection. This connection should run (on) through a string: Knotted, woven, entwined, a ribbon should tie us together.

With jersey ribbons of our own design, we drill, sew, weave and wrap practical, necessary, absurd and reprehensible things. All you need is: discarded T-shirts! Upcycling at its best!

Online workshop with Isabel Toccafondi for children and curious people, for those who’re in afternoon care and those give afternoon care, for Pinterest followers and handicraft nerds, aged 9 to 99, at school, at home or in a nursing home.

24.9.–18.10., Mon–Fri 14:10
Running time: 15 minutes

Just scan the QR code, launch Actionbound and let the kids build! By the way: Gimme Shelter! can also be quite exciting for parents.

Educational formats for Schools

Festivalfilme_goes_Watchparty

Film screenings with directors’ talks

Watch party feeling in the classroom? We’re giving it a try and visit schools with exceptional short films, popcorn and exciting guests—courtesy of a delivery service (disinfection included) and Zoom conferences!

Our films strive to create lasting impressions rather than just temporary entertainment. They catch our attention and play with our perception, thus raising questions that we can discuss with your students* and the filmmakers. It doesn’t matter whether half the class or the whole class is enjoying homeschooling or attending in person. We can make arrangements for you. You only need a projector in the classroom.

The program, including short descriptions of the individual films, can be found in our online leaflet Festivalfilme goes Watchparty.

L’Opra Fatale—An Intervention by Lulu Obermayer

Online workshop

Building on her practice of critically deconstructing gender roles, Lulu Obermayer occupies Graz’s opera building together with an ensemble of female singers to temporarily recast the canonical role of the woman in the opera.

How much do children and young people today reflect on role models? How strongly are they influenced by TV, pop, and high culture? And how relevant is opera in this context? Take a walk with your pupils on the digital paths to high culture to deconstruct its course into the 21st century.

From 4.10. onwards
Dates upon agreement
Length: 2 teaching units

Die Kunst ist meine Baustelle

Kultur als Online-Challenge!

(Art Is My Construction Site. Culture as Online Challenge!)

Online pupils’ conference

Using different tools such as Zoom, Miro, Mentimeter, etc., about 500 students* from HBLA Ortwein and HLW Schrödinger work (online and offline) in small groups on a project that enables them to look behind the scenes of a festival. Artworks from the festival serve as starting point and inspiration.

14.10., 15.10.

(Closed event)

Paranoia_Learningscapes

Discuss and produce

In an intensive two-day workshop, apprentices from the Murau and Feldbach regions engage in discussions with artists Robert Yerachmiel Sniderman and Anna Witt. What do art and life look like in the times of a pandemic, in the times of home office and home studio? In which work and discussion processes do artworks emerge? How does one find a topic?

Based on the working methods of Sniderman and Witt, the apprentices will try to understand art as an intellectual and haptic sphere of work—and thus enter a creative process themselves.

Closed workshop via Zoom/Actionbound with dates before and after the festival

Workshop chairs: Markus Plasencia and Elke Murlasits

With the kind support of OEAD/KulturKontakt Austria

Suddenly and forever

Kulturvermittlung im Festivalkontext
(Cultural mediation in the festival context)

Online conference

Mediation seems to have arrived in the field of art and culture. Usually the question is how to address a broader public and reach new visitors and target groups. Mediation is tasked with building a first communicative bridge in order to stimulate exchange and discussion of the contents to be conveyed. Especially in the context of festivals with their temporal and spatial limits, mediation is confronted with special questions and challenges. First and foremost, this concerns the conditions under which serious participation, sustainability and accessibility beyond cheap publicity stunts are possible.

As the central institution of steirischer herbst for cultural mediation, the Office of Open Questions already includes its concept in its name: we are interested in approaching topics based on open questions. Thus the starting point and idea of this conference is to discuss these questions and conditions in a discursive setting with experts from the German-speaking world and in exchange with cultural mediators from other festivals and art and cultural institutions, thus also creating opportunities for networking.

With Mark Terkessidis, Siglinde Lang, Ulli Mayer, and trafo.K
