(Brexit—Farce or Tragedy?)

In 2019 Jonathan Coe received both the European Book Prize and the British Costa Book Award for Middle England. The jury attested to how the English author brilliantly tells the story of a “changing country and the cracks that begin to appear within families and between generations.” The UK Prospect Magazine called the book “the perfect Brexit novel.” Middle England is the third part of a trilogy that started with The Rotters Club (2001) and The Closed Circle (2004). With his subtle satirical humor and deep-felt sympathy for England, the left-wing author has become one of the foremost interpreters of Brexit.
